Janis To Rock Theatre 145

By T. R. Septaric

Starting on June 13th the building that houses Theatre 145, 145 West 11th St in Erie , is going to rock like it never rocked before when “Remembering Janis” premieres.

“Remembering Janis” honors one of the 1960’s greatest singers, Janis Joplin, through the memories of one of the Haight-Ashbury hippies who knew Janis from the time she arrived in San Francisco until her death in 1970. His memories bring the spirit of Janis back to sing her most popular songs.

Janis is being played by Kristen Schrum who recently played June Carter Cash in “The Man In Black: The Johnny Cash Tribute Show.” “It was fun playing June Carter but she was a sweet little country girl so I had to hold back a lot. Janis is the opposite. Actually, she was a lot like I really am both musically and personally…a bit wild…untamed…so I am really going to be able to let loose."

“Janis is going to have a completely different crowd than there was for “Johnny,” Kristen said. There are going to be young people who love Janis, hippies and older people who remember her," she said.

When asked what she expects from “Remembering Janis” Kristen said, “I want to have fun with this play. The talent is there so I think that it is going to be really easy to have fun."

Local writer Rob Taylor wrote the script and he said that the late 60’s and early 70’s had such good music that writing the script was easy.  “Janis and those singers from San Francisco were such a force back then,” he said. “With the war, race riots, assassinations and everything that was going on back then it was good to have songs that we could relate to.”

Taylor said that he was inspired by what he found out about the life that Janis led but what amazed him was the ending. “I went to bed and an idea came into my head for the ending and it would not let me sleep until I got up and wrote it down. It was almost as if the spirit of Janis was telling me what to write and how the play should end.”

Producer/Director Steve Opsanic has good hopes for the play. He said that with Kristen playing Janis, the talented musicians and everyone else involved with the play working together, bouncing ideas off of each other there is no way that “Remembering Janis” isn’t going to be a hit.

Opsanic said that the first rehearsal for “Remembering Janis” was something unique. “We got the musicians and Kristen together and everything just clicked. It was as if they had been working together for years,” he said. “The music was perfect. Then Kristen did “Me And Bobbie McGee” as the first song and she rocked it. She is Janis!"

   "Remembering Janis” will run on June 13th, 20th, 21st, 26th, 27th, and 28th.
