A New Star Shines In Erie By Rob Taylor A
lot of times singers write songs about something that has happened in
their lives but when Kenny Chesney released “Superstar” he predicted
the future for an Erie area singer named Kristen Kristen, who is currently co-stars with Shannon Solo in Theatre 145’s Man in Black: The Johnny Tribute Show, was found singing karaoke in Hunter Jack’s in Girard by the play’s producer Steve Opsanic. Opsanic said that he was out looking for a singer to play June Carter Cash and he heard Kristen singing. “While I was driving to another club I realized that she was the one I wanted for the role,” he said. Unfortunately she left before he had the chance to talk to her. “I looked for her for a couple weeks, leaving my phone number with a lot of people hoping that they could help me find her and then the day before the open auditions for the play a girl called. Once I heard her sing again there was no doubt. She was my June Cash.” Although The Man in Black is her first major play Kristen has been doing karaoke for a long time and finished in the finals of Erie Idol three years ago. “I could have continued to try out after that year but I felt that it was taking away from the fun because you are competing with other people and I like to sing what comes from my heart,” she said. Kristen’s dream has always been to be a rock star. “People don’t take you seriously when you say that. That is like people saying that they want to be a baseball player,” she said. “I had one friend who toured with “Cats” who told me that anything in this world is possible and I believe that.” Although singing is her first passion Kristen said that, other than Man in Black, her only stage performance was in “Annie” when she was in high school but she is open to serious acting. “I am open to try anything. Anything that will get me out on stage makes me happy. When I perform I like the interaction with the audience and draw from their energy.” Even though her natural abilities tend to be toward rock and roll she said that appreciated the challenge of “becoming” a country star and she would love to do someone like Janis Joplin. “During Man in Black I have learned a lot. Shannon (Shannon Solo, who co-stars with Kristen in Man in Black) told me ‘As an actor, instead of making yourself be the character, find the character in you.’” The advice obviously worked because once Kristen took the stage she disappeared and June Carter Cash took her place. Kristen is going to be a talent to be reckoned with in this city. She is a huge firecracker in a very small package. Her talent, energy, humor and dedication have ignited the fuse and the explosion has started. This young woman, found in a club in Girard, has people talking and not one negative word has been spoken. In fact, she is being called an equal to Erie celebrity Amanda Post, who is best known for her performance as Patsy Cline. All that can be said about Kristen Schrum is watch out Erie! There is a new star on the horizon and she is going to be the hottest thing around. |
